OpalOpal is in the quartz family, and is basically the same chemical structure as quartz except that it contains water in the matrix. There are different types of opal...there is opal with fire, which is precious opal. This can range from clear to black in background and contains fire(flashes of light) which can include red, green, blue, yellow, orange etc. This is not the same thing as "Fire Opal", an orange based opal from Mexico, which may or may not contain 'fire', and sometimes is faceted. Opal is found in other parts of the world. Common opal is opal without fire. All opal except Peruvian will be found on this page. Australia is most famous for precious opal, but it is also found in many places incl. Brazil, Nevada and Eithiopia. |
